Pay Per Click Marketing, or PPC, is an Internet advertising model used to direct traffic from a website or a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) to a different website. From website to website, advertisers pay the publisher (typically a website owner) when the ad shown on their website is clicked. From a Search Engine Results Page to a website, the website owner pays the Search Engine Companies for placing their ads on the top, right column, and bottom of the search results pages. Again, the advertisers, this time it is the website owners, pay the search engine companies each time their ad is clicked.
Following the first example, a website places various advertisement blocks on their web pages. The contracted advertising agency, AdSense by Google for example, will drive pre-designed banner ads to those ad blocks and they are rendered by a browser each time a page on your website is rendered for a visitor. Each time one of these ads are clicked on by the visitor, the website owner is paid, whether the visitor buys a product at the destination site or not. This advertising model is open to abuse through click fraud, although Google and others have implemented automated systems to guard against abusive clicks by competitors or corrupt web developers. When caught, the penalties by the agencies can be severe.
This method is the only guaranteed way to hold top placement on a search engine results page. When a website owner purchases advertisements in this way, their ads, which look exactly like an organic search result looks like, are placed on page results of their choosing which are almost always top keywords for their line of business. These results are immediate and bring targeted traffic instantly! Contractual agreements for this type of advertising are similar in that the website owner pays for each click their ad receives. This model is less of a problem with click fraud as most abuse here is only from a competitor. The cost per click will vary but will be predetermined before the ad is placed.
The Affiliate model is a Pay For Performance advertisement model where the payment terms are often tied to actual sales rather than clicks. The website owner allocates advertising space on the various pages of their website and banner ads are selected and placed in these locations. When a visitor clicks on the ad their actions are recorded and the original website owner, you, are paid a predetermined percentage of the sale. If no sale then no commission. There is an added benefit with this type of advertising model in that a cookie is placed on the customers computer with a "good until" date. If that customer returns to that on-line store for additional purchases before that cookie expires, the website owner will receive a commission on those follow-on sales.
